Artistic Statement
What kind of artist am I?
In my artistry, I find joy, freedom, confidence, and love. I feel that I cannot answer this question in only a few sentences nor do I have a final answer. I feel that I am continually evolving and growing, learning new things about myself as an artist and the artistic community.
As a performer, I feel seen and free on a stage. I am my happiest as a performer when I can confidently walk onto a stage and transport myself into the scene or choreography. I love the first breath after walking off stage and the electricity that accompanies it.
As an educator, I feel connected to students in a way I don’t often feel connected to others. I enjoy incorporating history and anatomy into my teaching practice. My methodology focuses on critical-feminist pedagogy with an emphasis on freedom for the students with an open environment that allows them to express and learn about themselves as artists and humans.
As a choreographer, I take into consideration the dancers and artists I am working with, allowing them to express ideas, opinions, and concerns. I want to provide a space and piece that they feel represents them as much as it does me. I work closely with pathways and configurations of movement, time, and place. I love both expansive and full movement as well as sharp, detailed movement.
